I also posted this:

I've never been clear on this issue, and I suggested that if you don't support army service then you should not live in Israel, but the best and simplest argument I heard from Israeli Charedim is that they were there before the Zionists turned up with their ideas of creating a self-governing state and the Charedim were happy to be governed under the British Mandate.

So the Zionists created this mess of a state that is hated by so many and causes Jews to be hated around the world. They made the mess and so they should clear it up but you can't rope in a community that originally had no aspirations to live with military service.

If you check out the "Rational Judaism" site of Noson Slifkin he's got plenty of articles attacking those who won't share the burden of army.

I'm just pasting below one of my comments which I put there but I think is also relevant here:

"I'll explain from a moral perspective why this most recent war has made me object to Jews of all backgrounds joining the IDF.

The elite leftists who control the army have no respect for the lives of the soldiers. They are just cannon fodder in their eyes. Their priority is good PR in the eyes of the UN and world media, so there are countless times when they've sent their infantry into booby trapped houses in Gaza & Lebanon in order to protect so-called "civilians" when they could have bombed them remotely.

Joining the IDF is more an exercise in suicide than defending Israel.

They have been at war for 17 months in order to keep Hamas in power and strengthen them by releasing thousands of terrorist prisoners. How can they have lost 800 soldiers with thousands injured and paralyzed while fighting a small untrained army like Hamas in a tiny area like Gaza? The entire Syrian government was overthrown in 2 weeks by the rebels. The USA took the whole of Iraq in just a few weeks and Israel can't handle Gaza?!

The Generals, the supreme court and the politicians just don't care.

Statistically, the largest number of deaths and injuries have been suffered by the religious Zionist communities. They should wake up and realise how badly they are being treated.

When the leftists opposed judicial reform, they had no qualms with threatening to strike from army service. In the same vein, if secular and religious Jews en masse refuse to join the IDF, the IDF will be forced to change.

Alternatively, just like the Irgun was formed in the 1930s to do the job the IDF/Tzahal was failing to do and even used to attack the IDF, so should a new militia be formed to fight the IDF from the inside until the rotten organisation can be replaced. I believe many more Charedim would join an army that prioritised Israeli lives over terrorist lives.
